------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------To be honest with everyone, I didn’t have plans to screen this film at all. It was something that lingered within me for a bit and I wondered why if I happen to enjoy Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks and pretty intrigued to see how talent like Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde and Theater-Vet, Brian Dennehy would be used in this film – seriously with a film hashing out all these names and directed by Paul Haggis (‘CRASH’) – who I happen admire and respect – I really couldn’t find a reason. Perhaps it may be that I’ve already seen the typical clichéd story-line regarding innocence, incarceration, struggle, and going to the extreme in order to prove innocence, or maybe because advertising for this film may have been so lame, LIONSGATE – who I love as well – I think is betting on hard-core fans to come out and support based on a few posters, an ad here and there on TV and last but not least, word-of-mouth. In the end, we’ll have to wait and see what the outcome will be, but I know on my end it was an early Tuesday evening – November 9 a little after 5pm – when I received an out-of-the-blue phone call from one of the Publicists I work with asking if I had plans, and if I didn’t, would I be interested in attending NYC’s premier – not screening – of ‘THE NEXT THREE DAYS.’ If the answer would be yes, she had room for one more person, and she’d jot my name down and I’d have a pass at Will Call. I was on it like White on rice! I’ve done a billion screenings, but never a premier. Well, that’s not necessarily true, but this was a Red-Carpet type of event and to make a long story short, it was awesome! Although I didn’t go as “Press,” or allowed to walk the carpet – not that I wanted – in the end, we were all sitting in the same theater/auditorium (The Ziegfield – 54th. between 6th/7th) and next thing you know, Paul Haggis is giving a quick speech about the film and how studios all over Hollywood declined, and how LIONSGATE was supportive and believed in it yadda yadda – then he starts to thank the cast who were on hand, everyone clapped and on with the film! Good karma, ladies and gentleman!
‘THE NEXT THREE DAYS’ is a film which starts off by presenting a couple whose life seems perfect, however, for John (Crowe) and Lara (Banks) Brennan all is turned up-side down when Lara is arrested for a gruesome murder she says she didn't commit – or did she? Three years into her sentence, John struggles to hold his family together, raising their son, Luke (Simpkins) and teaching at a Community College while he pursues every means available to prove her innocence. With the rejection of their final appeal, Lara becomes suicidal and John decides there is only one possible, bearable solution: to break his wife out of prison. Refusing to be deterred by impossible odds or his own inexperience, John devises an elaborate escape plot and plunges into a dangerous and unfamiliar world, ultimately risking everything for the woman he loves.
Okay I know what you’re thinking, sounds pretty intriguing and perhaps a film that’s full of intensity, and guess what? You’re right! My issue with this is that even though it’s structured differently and full of nail-biting scenes, I’ve seen this kind of film already. A prison break film is a prison break film no matter how you cut it or who’s the person looking to break out, or contribute in a break out – the only thing that works for this film is the fact that SHE (Lara) doesn’t want to break out at all. Although she’s expressed her innocence many times over, there’s a strange mind-set of having adjusted to her way of life and demands her husband (John) get use to it as well, however, like many who go for drastic measures, the husband is the one who’s planning it step-by-step and becomes so cryptic in his ways – which is where Liam Neeson’s character comes into play among others – it’s clear no matter what happens, he knows there’s a back-up plan for the raising of his loving son in the event all hell breaks loose – no pun! I would never compare this film to say ‘SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION’ or the latest ‘CONVICTION’ – which I recently saw – because they’re different in many ways, but the layers of extreme measures are similar. Strange I say this, but yes, they’re “differently the same.” But what works for this film is the acting, direction and pacing.
ACTING
Without a doubt casting Russell Crowe in your film will really sell a character. There’s an intensity this man oozes, that one just gets lost in his world. Playing John Brennan turned out really well – straight forward and transparent! Elizabeth Banks is a gorgeous actress whose been creeping into my radar and I’ve been eyeing her for a while now. She’s not exactly a winner when it comes to some of the films she’s been in because they’ve all pretty much tanked – with the exception of ‘THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN’ where she plays the role of “Beth.” If you’re lost, she’s the strange whack-job who pretty much comes on to Steve Carrell at the bookstore, but then winds up banging Seth Rogen in the Jacuzzi, remember? Well, that’s irrelevant here, as Lara Brennan she did pretty well. The role was so simple and subtle it landed her pretty well. There are some pretty good scenes which are emotionally driven and she flared pretty well with Russell. With that said, I also cannot forget Olivia Wilde and Liam Neeson who play small roles that serve Russell’s character in different ways. Both keep a level of survival for John, however, one’s based on sanity and the other “balls” – as Damon Pennington (Neeson) so eloquently puts it!
DIRECTING / PACING
I’m not sure how hard it is to direct a bunch of egos while on set, but one thing’s for sure, Haggis pulled it off. He has lots of experience with it due to his history of working with ensemble casts, so it’s without question it worked with ‘THE NEXT THREE DAYS.’ Every scene has a sense of urgency. Paul made sure every character met their objective at all cost, and even though there really wasn’t a story based on Protagonist versus Antagonist – others may beg to differ – the film kept its mood and structured pace. I guess that’s what experience is all about, right?
Personally speaking, this film’s way too long and I once again state how we’ve seen this film many times over, however, ‘THE NEXT THREE DAYS’ is watchable, delivered a good story about extreme love, and to be honest, didn’t disappoint. Sure, it’s not the best film, but one can never fail when you have Russell Crowe running around unleashing his Hulk-like characteristics. It’s strange how he’s like that in real life too – scary!
